ENGL 131:Racism, Law & the Press: Richard Wright’s _Native Son_

In this research-intensive course, we will reconstruct the 1939 murder trial and execution of Robert Nixon, the exhaustive press coverage of which Richard Wright fictionalizes in his novel, _Native Son_ (1940). This legal, journalistic, and literary case study provides an excellent opportunity to analyze representations of race and criminality in American culture.
