Description:

This course cannot be repeated and is limited to upper-division English majors only.
We will be working on students' individual poetry projects, reviewing the traditional tactics and achievements of poetic forms, while also investigating how poetry composition and distribution are inflected, even transformed, by forms of new media. We will read a lot of poetry, generate a lot of writing to be workshopped in class and outside, and recontextualize these efforts through investigations of the changes that are occurring in the genre as it is re-articulated in various technical modes, e.g. documentary poetry. The required text is X. J. Kennedy and Dana Gioia's Introduction to Poetry, 13th edition, but much of the seminar will also require work on laptops.
