Description:

Welcome to an abbreviated version of Tolkien's world. Students will choose
a critical strand of inquiry (race, gender, or environment) and create a
final project around one of these nodes in Tolkien's universe.

The course has two goals: to understand Tolkien within a broader
literary/cultural context and to have a good time doing rigorous literary
analysis.

Readings: *Beowulf* (Seamus Heaney), *The Silmarillion*, *The Fellowship of
the Ring*, *The Return of the King*, and *Tree and Leaf*

Films: *The Hobbit* (1977) and *The Two Towers* (2002)
