Description:

This class is an introduction to literary studies, providing students with insights into the ways the discipline functions and experience critiquing a variety of literary forms in a variety of modes. As we study the study of literature, we will use these techniques to enhance critical thinking and develop argumentative skills. This English 10 course will take “border controls” as our focalizing theme—examining literary responses to the paradoxical pairing of increasing mobility with increasingly enforced borders characterizing the modern age. We will examine twentieth and twenty-first century literature by Christopher Isherwood, Mohsin Hamid, Katherine Mansfield, and Gloria Anzaldua, alongside critical and historical texts.
