Poetry

Use the poetry guidelines (from Scholes) and our literary terms to help you in your reading of the poems.

On a basic level, these are the kinds of questions you should be asking yourself:

  1. What is the story of the poem (what happens)?
  2. Who is speaking? Is character important?
  3. What images are used in the telling of the story?
  4. How is figurative language used?
  5. What emotions or sensations are evoked by the poem?
  6. What sounds and kinds of sounds are used (is there rhyme, alliteration, euphony, cacophony)? How do these elements contribute to the creation of images, sensations, story, etc.?
  7. Now consider what you feel is the meaning or significance of the poem. How have these elements (above) helped to develop this meaning?
