Poetry
Use the poetry guidelines (from Scholes) and our literary terms
to help you in your reading of the poems.
On a basic level, these are the kinds of questions you should be
asking yourself:
- What is the story of the poem (what happens)?
- Who is speaking? Is character important?
- What images are used in the telling of the story?
- How is figurative language used?
- What emotions or sensations are evoked by the poem?
- What sounds and kinds of sounds are used (is there rhyme, alliteration,
euphony, cacophony)? How do these elements contribute to the creation of
images, sensations, story, etc.?
- Now consider what you feel is the meaning or significance of the poem.
How have these elements (above) helped to develop this meaning?
