About Melissa

I am a PhD candidate in the English department at UCSB with a specialization in science fiction and the intersection of technology and popular culture.

I am currently completing a dissertation project entitled "Conversations with Ghosts and Machines: Encounters with Technology and the (Re)definition of the Human in 20th Century Science Fiction." This project examines the shifting definition of humanity in response to technological change across the twentieth century, addressing mechanization, computation, robotics, and the virtual as reflected in English and American literature and film.

My wider interests include contemporary American literature, cultural studies, film theory, new media studies, short fiction, and children’s literature.

While at UC Santa Barbara, I have designed and taught courses in science fiction, the modern short story, literature and technology, heroes and monsters, and composition. I have also served as a teaching assistant in a variety of courses including advanced film theory and detective fiction.

As a member of our department's digital humanities initiative I helped develop a new master’s exam emphasis in Literature and Theory of Technology, and was responsible for development of pedagogical tools for our new high-tech classroom. I assisted in the organization of several thematically related conferences and designed a suite of web resources for the academic community to assist faculty and graduate students in the implementation of technology in their courses.
