Bethany Wong's research focuses on gender, theater, and the novel. She studies how eighteenth-century female authors, in response to anxieties about female illegibility during the rise of the professional actress in Britain, introduce “virtuous theatricality” for their fictional heroines to claim authority for women writers, female protagonists, and the novel genre as they learn together what it means to act on the busy stage of life.
