Bethany Wong's research focuses on gender, theater, and the novel. She studies how eighteenth-century female authors, in response to anxieties about female illegibility during the rise of the professional actress in Britain, introduce “virtuous theatricality” for their fictional heroines to claim authority for women writers, female performers, and the novel genre as they all learn from the theater what it means to act on the busy stage of life.
