Minor in English
For students who began the minor before July 1, 2000
(requirements for students beginning the minor after this date)
Students who began the minor in English before July 1, 2000, have the choice of completing the old minor requirements or the new minor requirements. Some courses for the old minor are no longer available. Please use the Course Substitutions conversion table below to learn which courses are substitutes for the old major requirements.

Old Requirements of the Minor in English
(for students entering the minor before July 1, 2000)

Preparation
One course from English 10, 20, 30, 40, 97 (4 units)

Upper Division
20 UD units, distributed as follows:
  • 4.0 units of pre-1700 literature from English 115, 117A, 117B, 117E, 118, 119, 144, 145, 152A, 152B, 157, 160, 162
  • 4.0 units of literature from 1700's to 1900's from English 126A, 126B, 126C, 136A, 136B, 137A, 138B, 168, 169, 172, 177, 178, 179, 180, 181
  • 12.0 units of English electives


Depending on course content the following courses may apply to Area 1 or to Area 2 of the upper-division minor: English 114AA-ZZ, 128AA-ZZ, 131, 132AA-ZZ, 133AA-ZZ, 134AA-ZZ, 151AA-ZZ, 165AA-ZZ. Any of these courses apply automatically to area C. Contact department to see which courses will apply to areas A and B in a given quarter. Substitutions and waivers are subject to approval by the chair of the department.

Course Substitutions (for students completing the minor under the old requirements after the new minor went into effect July 1, 2000)
Old Courses New Courses
English 20 can be substituted for English 101: "English Literature from the Medieval period to 1650"
English 30 can be substituted for English 102: "English and American literature from 1650-1789"
English 136B can be substituted for

English 103A: "American Literature from 1789 -1900"
English 40 can be substituted for English 103B: "British Literature from 1789-1900"
English 136C can be substituted for

English 104A: "American Literature from 1900-present"
The Shakespeare Option:
English 117A can be substituted for English 105A: "Shakespeare, Poems and Earlier Plays"
English 117B can be substituted for English 105B: "Shakespeare, Later Plays"
Note: English 117A or 117B or 118 can be substituted for English 15: Introduction Shakespeare
