Welcome to an abbreviated version of Tolkien’s world. In this reading-intensive seminar, students will learn about Tolkien’s literary scholarship and study his mythmaking in Middle Earth. Students will also design a final creative project inspired by Tolkien’s universe.
The course has two goals: to understand Tolkien within a broader literary and cultural context and to have a good time doing rigorous literary analysis.
Required course texts: *Beowulf* (2014), *The Silmarillion* (Houghton Mifflin, 2004), *The Fellowship of the Ring* (Mariner, 2012), *The Two Towers* (Mariner, 2012), *The Return of the King* (Mariner, 2012).
