When writers write now, what do you write about, and whose stories do you tell—and how do you tell them? In this class, we read a set of cutting-edge and adventurous creative writers from across the world. These are writers who are writing about the concerns and pleasures of people at this moment. We read novels, a range of short stories and poems by writers from the US, Japan, Nigeria, China, India, Ireland, and Britain, and work by a diverse group of diasporan writers. Writers might include Ocean Vong, Tomi Adeyemi, Toni Morrison, Haruki Murakami, Edna O’Brien, Sally Rooney, Zadie Smith, Carol-Ann Duffy, and Teju Cole. The focus: novels, short stories, poems, videos, art installations.
