This class will engage a range of works from queer and trans theory to explore the complex relationships between sexuality, normativity, and time. We will explore how the temporal categories of past, present and future are unsettled via queer theory, and trace a range of different relationships between the self and time generated from these perspectives. In doing this we will develop an understanding of the unavoidably political nature of temporality, and the ways in which queer time seeks to imagine a different world. We will engage with theoretical works alongside a range of poems and other artworks which also theorize queer time in different ways. Readings from Jack Halberstam, José Esteban Muñoz, Zairong Xiang, Carolyn Dinshaw, Talia Mae Bettcher, Elizabeth Freeman, Mel Y. Chen, and others.
