Building on “Oceanic Forms I” (2023), this course will survey recent scholarship and fiction in the Blue Humanities focusing on the Pacific Ocean. Readings will examine a variety of oceanic forms and formations that enfold the social, political, and multispecies relations. Throughout the course, we will pay close attention to the specific ways that the ocean encourages and even necessitates thinking with social forms, economic forms, media forms, literary forms, and lifeforms. Readings will be drawn from literary fiction, science and technology studies, aesthetics, literary theory, logistics, documentary film, and other ecoliteratures. By the end of the course, students should be able to creatively engage ways of thinking with and through the ocean and its many form(ation)s.
