COMMA Discussion:
Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World
3:00 - 5:00PM
Discussion
Jan
You are cordially invited to attend our first COMMA meeting of Winter Quarter, Friday, Jan. 31 @ 3:00 PM, in South Hall 2623 (Sankey Room).
Please join us to discuss Romanian director Radu Jude’s film Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World, which several outlets have called one of the “best films of 2024.” As critic Nicholas Rapold wrote in Sight and Sound: “Jude skewers managerial classes and the falseness of choice for workers when power and money imbalances are severe. But far from declaring political points, he also strives to capture the textures and rhythms of modern existence – and in its discontinuity and relentlessness – with a sense of adventure and specificity notable among his contemporaries.”
To allow for a full discussion, this will not be a screening; but the film is available to stream in advance at your leisure with a MUBI free trial and account (and to rent from various streaming services.) We will, however, have the film ready to share clips as they facilitate the conversation.
Please feel free to forward this event to your colleagues. We would be delighted if you joined us for the conversation. For more details and other questions, please contact Leila Stegemoeller, lstegemoeller@ucsb.edu.
