This course will introduce graduate students in English to the department, the university, and the disciplines in which we work. We’ll focus on practical matters of pedagogy including discussions of classroom practice and options for grading, and we’ll explore various genres of academic and professional writing, including the dissertation prospectus, the conference paper, and the journal article. Beyond the fundamentals of disciplinary practice, we’ll also explore broad issues affecting the study of the humanities in California today. Students in the first year of the program are strongly encouraged to enroll.
