This course aims to familiarize students with the myriad works of women writers of early modern England, including their biographical, historical, and theoretical contexts. This class will ensure students have a working knowledge of often untaught, marginalized voices in English literature. We will not only explore the texts written by women authors, but we will try to establish their interaction with the larger (and largely male) literary canon of Renaissance writers, such as Shakespeare and Milton. Finally, we will interrogate what it means to study “women” writers of the early modern period today.
