In Victorian London in 1848 a group of young artists and writers joined together to form the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and changed the landscape of Victorian visual culture. Outraging conventional society with their potent blend of vibrant, sensual, and sexual subject matter, the Brotherhood soon became the most infamous artists of their generation. We will consider the origins of Pre-Raphaelitism, its major works in painting and literature, and its influence on the development of Victorian culture through the late 19th Century. Artists and authors examined will include Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais, Christina Rossetti, William Morris, Walter Pater, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Oscar Wilde, Alfred Tennyson, Robert Browning, John Ruskin, and others.
