Explores life stories produced by Indigenous Women, Queer, Trans, and Two-Spirit writers, including an expansive understanding of the memoir genre to include documentary film, lyrical essay, poetry, autobiography, auto-ethnography, creative non-fiction, comics, and testimonials. Assigned texts include foundational writers such as Lee Maracle, Daniel Heath Justice, and Ma-Nee Chacaby and newer writers such as Terese Mailhot and Janet Mock. Students engage in theoretical literary analysis, complete a research paper, and have an opportunity to develop their own creative writing skills. The course culminates in a class zine of student creative work.
