I specialize in twentieth-century American literature and the study of technology and society. My research is characterized as “distant reading,” which theorizes the use of computers and statistics toward literary interpretation. Although these methods may appear strange at first glance, the questions I hope to answer are familiar ones in literary history: How do the conditions of reading and writing literature change over the century? How does the arrival of now-ubiquitous computer technology shape these? I have begun a project that excavates a genealogy of data scientific methods in order to offer new answers to these questions.

Prior to my arrival at UCSB, I completed my M.A. at the University of Chicago, and I was the Coordinator for Digital Literary Study with the Digital Humanities at Berkeley Initiative. I earned my B.A. from Oberlin College. Follow me on Twitter @teddyroland or visit my personal website teddyroland.com.
