Jim Casey is an assistant professor of English at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He earned his PhD in English from the University of Delaware and held a postdoctoral fellowship in the Center for Digital Humanities at Princeton University. Previously he was an assistant professor of African American Studies, History, and English at Penn State, where he co-founded the Center for Black Digital Research/DigBlk. 

His research and teaching begin with nineteenth-century Black print culture, literature, and political organizing and extend into the areas of public humanities, digital humanities, archives, critical data studies, crowdsourcing, and machine learning. 

He is co-editor of two books: with P. Gabrielle Foreman, The Colored Conventions Movement: Black Organizing in the Nineteenth Century (UNC Press, 2020); and with Joshua Ortiz Baco, Benjamin Charles Germain Lee, and Sarah H. Salter, Cultures of Scale: Disciplines, Data, and Labor (Debates in DH, University of Minnesota Press, forthcoming). His scholarship is available in a handful of edited volumes and in American Literature, Civil War History, Criticism, American Periodicals, and Computational Humanities Research. 

His work has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the National Historical Publications and Records Commission of the National Archives (NHPRC), The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and others. His collaborative digital projects have been recognized by the MLA Biennial Prize for a Digital Project; the ASA Digital Humanities Caucus Digital Project Prize; and was designated by the National Endowment for the Humanities as one of its sixty all-time “Essentials.” 

He is past president of the Research Society for American Periodicals and an elected lifetime member of the American Antiquarian Society.
