Incoming Students

The faculty, staff and current graduate students of the Department of English are excited to welcome you to our community. Please take the following steps to accept our offer, ensure your admission is in order, get situated in Santa Barbara, and begin your graduate career.

  1. Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  2. Submit your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) & Financial Offer Letter (provided by the Department) — Due April 15th
  3. Submit your Statement of Legal Residency (SLR)
  4. Activate your UCSB umail account
  5. Apply for housing — Due May 1
  6. Register for courses on GOLD (typically, graduate students sign up for 2 courses, i.e. 8 credits)
  7. Complete new hire paperwork (for TAs, RAs and GSRs)
  8. Obtain ACCESS card (student ID card)
  9. Attend orientation and departmental social events
  10. Read the English Department Handbook
